Typing Speed Test

Type the text for one minute. You get your net words per minute and your accuracy, compared with people on the same kind of keyboard.

Start typing to begin the 60-second clock0 WPM

Tip: keep your eyes on the text, not on your fingers.

What this test measures

The average typing speed is around 40 to 50 words per minute on a computer keyboard and about 35 words per minute on a phone. A large 2018 study of 168,000 volunteers found an average of 52 WPM on physical keyboards. Above 70 WPM is fast; above 100 WPM is exceptional.

Typing speed combines reading ahead, finger coordination and error correction. MindSpeed counts net words per minute: only correctly typed characters count, so typing fast with many mistakes does not help. Phones and physical keyboards are ranked separately because they are very different skills.

How it works

  1. Click the text box and start typing the text; the one-minute clock starts with your first key.
  2. Mistakes are shown in red. You can correct them with backspace.
  3. After 60 seconds you get your words per minute and your accuracy.

Your score is net words per minute: correctly typed characters divided by five, per minute (higher is better). Mistakes left in the text do not count; corrected ones only cost time.

How to do your best

  • Accuracy first: a steady pace with few mistakes beats bursts of speed.
  • Read one or two words ahead of what you are typing.
  • On a phone, type with both thumbs and turn off autocorrect for the test.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

40–50 WPM is average on a computer, 70 WPM is fast and 100 WPM is exceptional. On a phone, 35 WPM is typical.

What does net WPM mean?

Only correctly typed characters count, divided by five (the length of an average word) per minute. It is the fairest single number for typing speed.

Why are phone and keyboard results separate?

They are different skills: people type much faster on physical keyboards. Mixing them would make every phone result look poor.

Which language is the text in?

The language of the page, for most languages. Japanese, Chinese and Korean pages use English text for now, because typing those scripts goes through an input method.
