What is the average reaction time?
The average simple visual reaction time is about 250 milliseconds in laboratory studies. In online tests, which include the delay of screens and mice, the median is around 270 ms with a mouse and around 300 ms on a touchscreen. Under 220 ms beats most people.

Why online results are slower than lab results
Laboratory studies use special hardware that responds in a millisecond. A normal computer or phone adds the time the screen needs to show the change and the time the mouse or touchscreen needs to report your input, typically 20 to 80 ms in total.
That is why MindSpeed never mixes devices: a 290 ms result on a phone can be as good as a 260 ms result with a gaming mouse.
Voluntary online results are not a representative sample of any population. Use them to compare yourself, not to compare countries or age groups scientifically. How we measure
Frequently asked questions
What is a good reaction time?
Below the median of your device group is above average: about 270 ms with a mouse or 300 ms on a touchscreen. Under 200 ms is excellent.
What is the fastest human reaction time?
Reactions faster than about 100 ms are considered anticipations rather than reactions; sprint starts use this limit too. The fastest genuine visual reactions are around 120–150 ms.
Is auditory reaction time faster?
Yes. People usually react to sounds 20 to 50 ms faster than to visual signals.
